Rice terraces can be found in other parts of the world but the ones found along the slopes of Ailao Mountains have unique features that are distinct enough to make the place a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During winter, the rice fields are filled with water and the area turns into a canvass with flowing colours of green, red, gold and blue, formed by the contours of the mountainside and reflections of the blue skies.
