The exterior of the Castle of the East remains essentially the aspect that was given in the second half of the sixteenth century. The fourth entrance, to the east, was sacrificed to make room for the kitchens. Although the lower part of the building continues to maintain the structure of a medieval fortress, at the top the painter and decorator Giorolamo da Carpi installed elegant white stone terraces.
