In addition to churches Palermo is also a place with impressive palaces. These buildings are an embodiment of history and culture, with an impressive exhibition of ancient architecture. The Palazzo Dei Normanni (Norman Palace) is the most important of the palaces, because it was the seat of the kings of Sicily, during the age of the Normans.

The palace stands on the highest point of the ancient city and offers a huge collection of artworks, sculptures, and other noteworthy elements. The Zisa is another top rated castle, built in the 12th century by Arabian craftsmen working for King William I of Sicily. There is also Palazzo Abatellis, with location in the Kalsa quarter. It houses the Gallery of Art for the Sicilian region.
