The most important and impressive building in this square is the Palazzo Vecchio, the heart of the city’s civil power. Today it is the headquarters of several departments of the City Council. The first thing that impacts this building is the impossibility of photographing it whole since the Arnolfo Tower, 95 m high, prevents it. In its highest part it highlights a flag with the lily, symbol of Florence. The Palazzo Vecchio is considered the best example of civil architecture of the three hundred. In front of the palace is a copy of Michelangelo’s David. The square, for many years considered cursed for being the scene of confrontation between Guelfos and Gibellinos, is today the center of the city’s social life.
