Ukraine produces so much food that it can feed the whole of the Soviet Union. Currently, it is fast gaining grounds to become the food basket of Europe. Ukraine is an environmentally safe region which is friendly to the growth of food crops. Pollution and contamination are reduced to the barest minimum. It is believed that this treasure of Ukrainian gastronomy has its origin in the Tartaro-Mongolian period, during that time several areas of what is now Ukraine were attacked taking hostage invaders and prisoners. For religious reasons Muslim invaders did not consume pork, making this animal the basic food for the toughest times. The value of the salo in Ukrainian cuisine is such that songs and poems have even been dedicated to it, and it was for a long time a cheap alternative to meat, given its easy preservation.
