Another picturesque village is Fort Augustus set in a series of locks along the Caledonian Canal. So, before it will enter the Loch Ness, this beautiful village will greet its visitors. This makes it a famous place from which exploring the Highlands has been made possible. Fort Augustus is the most relevant population of Loch Ness. And it is not so much because of its number of inhabitants, which does not reach a thousand, but because it is a nerve center for the services and activities of the area. The most important infrastructure is the locks on the Caledonian Canal that runs between Fort William and Inverness. It is worth a walk both through the village and through this series of locks that lead to a beautiful view of the lake. Otherwise, there are several interesting shops on site such as The Millshop, The Clansman Center and of course the Canal Visitor Center, as well as numerous accommodations and restaurants.
