9Portnahaven in Islay

The village of Portnahaven is one of the attractive villages of Islay or better known as the Queen of the Hebrides. This part of Islay has holiday cottages and fine sandy beaches that you can take a walk with a partner. Landing in Islay is a high-risk sport, especially if the skies are overcast and the storm is heavy. From above one sees a small path that begins at the foot of the sea and exclaims: it can’t be! If it is. The plane brushes the water and stops next to a white house: it is the airport … But the experience is worth it. The northernmost island in the Inner Hebrides is 600 square kilometers dotted with farms, distilleries, lakes, and ancient ruins. All this can be seen very quickly (in a taxi the island is covered from end to end in two hours … or less) or take it with relaxation and enjoy its charms peacefully. We recommend the latter option, even if a light drizzle fogs the car’s windshield or forces you to remove the umbrella. Yes, Islay is famous for its single malt whiskeys, true works of art appreciated all over the world by palates given to that pleasure. The peat, which covers most of the interior, gives the unique flavor to its malts, such as Bowmore, Laphroaig or Ardberg. This last distillery has been awarded for years with the prizes for the best malt whiskey in the world. Your visit, like the rest of the distilleries, is a must: they offer routes inside with tastings included and enjoy the production process (an enriching experience).
