This ancient capital of Egypt was once a capital of the first Nome in Lower Egypt. The name Memphis was derived from the Greek deformation of the Egyptian name of Pepi I’s pyramid known as the Men-nefer. Memphis became a prestigious location under the 6th Dynasty as the center of Ptah’s cult, which slowly declined with the rise of the Thebes in the 18th Dynasty.
