Keeping the high street clean and attractive is not an easy thing to do. But, the village of Criccieth has been kept this way since the 18th century, particularly with displays of flowers all year round. An excellent package of delights awaits those who would like to visit the place. Resting on a promontory that juts out into Tremaddog Bay, Criccieth Castle demonstrates the influence that King Edward I had on the construction of the Welsh fortress. Built by Llywelyn the Great in the late 13th century, the design included many features of Edwardian castles, including an exterior wall, outward arrow slits, and murder holes in the hallways. It is located on the top of a cliff with privileged views of Cardigan Bay. It was commissioned to build first by Llywelyn the Great, who built the watchtowers, then his grandson Llywelyn the Last added the outer room, the walls, and two new towers.
