Every year, thousands of tourists flock to New Orleans to attend a lively festival that is also a traditional Christian holiday. Also called Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras starts a day before Ash Wednesday. It originated in medieval Europe and arrived in New Orleans in the 1700s.
