Every year, thousands of tourists flock to New Orleans to attend a lively festival that is also a traditional Christian holiday. Also called Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras starts a day before Ash Wednesday. It originated in medieval Europe and arrived in New Orleans in the 1700s. Far from the street parades attended by revellers today, it used to be celebrated as elegant banquets.
