An example of Norman architecture, this castle was originally built as a fortress by the Earl of Northumberland and was the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Durham. Now a part of the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site, this castle has interesting rooms, including, a Norman Chapel with archaic capitals, the 17th century Black Stairs and a 14th century dining hall.
