These should be at the top of your must-visit list when you’re in Chester. The walls date back to the Roman times and allow you to pass several attractions along the way, such as King Charles’ Tower and the ancient clock that marked the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Walking along the City Walls amounts to a two-mile hike, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allot plenty of time to complete the circuit. After the amphitheater, you can continue to explore Chester’s Roman times by taking a stroll through the city walls. Chester is advertised as the city that houses the best preserved Roman walls in England, with more than 3 kilometers open to visitors. The closest gate to access them is Newgate (7). If you’re traveling with children, perhaps the route through the ramparts is the most interesting thing to see in Chester in a day. On your walk through the ramparts you will come across the Eastgate Clock (8), a clock built in 1897 to celebrate 60 years of Queen Victoria’s reign.
