3Matera, i “sassi” World Heritage Site

It’s not as unknown as some others, but it’s really one of the most spectacular places in Italy. The name “sassi” means “stones” and in Matera it serves to designate its historical center, a unique example of rock architecture that develops its buildings excavated in the rock. It is an ancient and very original structure with unique beauty. The ‘sassi’ -stones- of Matera make up the historic center of the city, excavated on the same mountain. Some of the houses that we find there have been inhabited since the Bronze Age. You will not find a city like this in another part of the world, so we recommend that you spend several days exploring it. The city of Matera (Unesco World Heritage Site) is a concentrate of vineyards, alleys, houses, balconies, churches, collected from the stone (scent). The best way to get to know it and enjoy it is to walk it (especially since a large part of the city is pedestrianized), up and down its alleys, discovering the churches, the houses and the few remaining inhabitants. My personal recommendation is to get to the city center following the “I sassi” signs. Parking the car (because of the geography it is very difficult to find public parking on the street, so you have to park in the private parking lots) and go down to the natural and main “balcony” of the city in Piazzetta Pascoli. From there you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Matera (i Sassi). Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
