7Castillo de Fénis, Valle d’Aosta

It is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. It is very close to Aosta within its province and is a castle absolutely from a fairy tale. Its origin dates from the 12th century and its construction lasted until the 16th century. The castle is distributed around a square courtyard and does not lack any of the typical elements of a photo, its defensive walls, its protection towers and its battlements. Fortress and home, those were the functions of the castle of Fénis. The first written documents about the castle date from 1242 and they believe that it was built on an old Roman villa. It is one of the castles of the Aosta Valley that you cannot miss. The castle, unlike the rest, is in a flat place, so Aimone de Challant ordered the construction of a stronger defensive system with double enclosure walls. One of the highlights is the interior courtyard with perfectly preserved frescoes, the fresco of Saint George slaying the dragon and the semicircular staircase.
