Divers were able to discover mysterious underwater pyramids and rock terraces in the 1980s. This was along the coast of Yonaguni Jima, lying near the southern end of Japan near Taiwan. The discovery was believed to be the remnants of the mythical city of Mu, an ancient civilization thought to have vanished under the waves. The remains date back to 5,000 years on the basis of the stalactites found inside the caves that sank with the city.
