The granite faces with a height of 60ft portray the United States presidents George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. To see Mount Rushmore we have to go to the town of Keystone, which belongs to South Dakota. It is one of the best known monuments internationally, for its frequent appearance in films, series and different audiovisual media where Mount Rushmore appears. As you can see in the images, it consists of a mountain where the faces of four presidents of the United States have been carved: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. To give you an idea of the dimensions, it reaches a height of 18 meters and if they had a body they would measure 140 meters in height. These proportions and the materials used to carve them (dynamite and pneumatic drills) have not prevented us from being in front of sculptures that keep great detail and precision in each of their features. The origin of these sculptures takes us back to 1923, at which time historian Doane Robinson suggested that some type of sculpture be erected near the Rushmore location that would be a tribute to national heroes. It was the sculptor John Gutzon Borglum who proposed that the faces of the presidents be carved and began his work in 1927. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
