Obviously, the big water tower is shaped like a corn. It is located close to the Seneca Foods factory situated in Rochester, Minnesota. This should be a perfect background for taking selfies or some picture-perfect moments with family or friends. Built in 1931, this tower was originally erected to provide water for the “Reid, Murdoch & Co.” cannery, which opened in 1929. Although the cannery he served is now closed, this landmark of Rochester (Olmsted County, Minnesota, United States) remains a reminder to locals and visitors of the city’s agricultural past. The peculiar corncob-shaped water tower is 46 meters high, while its tank is 18 meters high. The tower was designed by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., a company that has created 15 water tanks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Illuminated by 10 lights at night, the “cob tower” can be seen from the US 14 highway. From the 1930s through the 1960s, the water tower was used by the Army Air Corps and the United States Air Force to supply a nearby airfield. The 50,000-gallon (190,000-liter) water tower, as well as the cannery, has changed hands several times, being purchased by Libby Foods in 1,948 and Seneca Foods in 1982. Seneca operated the plant for over 30 years before closing its doors in 2018. Since the plant closed, the water tower has been owned by Olmsted County. Click the next ARROWÂ to see the next image!
