Considered a small town but definitely a village, Kirkcudbright has been popular since 1455 as a Royal Burgh. Its popularity was part of the attractive streets, ancient buildings, and pastel-colored houses. Likewise, it has been known as an Artist’s Town. Kirkcudbright, a place famous for its artistic atmosphere and its ruined Castle. The 16th century MacLellan Castle was the residence of the family that gave it its name and was completed by one of its noblest members: Thomas Maclellan de Bombie. Apart from its beautiful architectural remains, it also has a privileged location on the banks of the River Dee, it is the only villa on the Solway coast with a working port and it has a beautiful mix of medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture. This was also a favorite enclave for many Scottish artists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many of the productions made during the period of splendor in these endless artists’ meetings have been collected in two art centers within the town itself: the “Tolbooth Art Center” and the “Harbor Cottage Gallery” and have earned this small city of art the name of “The People of the Artists”. Surely here you can also take beautiful memories of this royal borough established in the mid-fifteenth century. Very significant of the place are also its small colored houses, its wide streets or a wide compendium of shops as a family business that come to be everything that can be found in this charming “village”.
